ROCKING GOOD MOTO!

South Somerset Motocross Club held Rnd 5 CC and Rnd 4 Grand Slam Qualifier at Rockhampton. This was the first time that SSMXC have used Rockhampton and we weren’t disappointed, a natural fast flowing track with Table tops, uphill ski jumps, whoops, step ups and fast opened bermed corners in a stunning location with views up the Bristol Channel.

After a long dry spell of weather the track was watered heavily the day before to prevent the dust becoming a problem on race day, we knew we couldn’t water during racing as this would make the track slick and dangerous, not something you want with a track that carries a lot of speed. The Uley guys did a pretty good job Saturday evening watering and prepping the track beforehand, many thanks from South Somerset.

First out in practice and moto order were the Big Wheels and Small Wheels. All three moto’s were great to watch, Loukas Maggio was the man to beat and in moto two Billy King did just that, after grabbing the holeshot on his trusted KTM he was out and gone. Luke Williams was always in contention, as was Tom Coate having good battle’s with each other throughout all three moto’s. Joe Phillips and Ross Parkinson were not far behind having their own little battle. Bradley Flagg kept pushing on his small wheel RM as did Callum Ford and Miles Jones. With some of these riders lap times as fast as and faster than the MX1/MX2 riders , some good racing was to be seen, well done!

Next to the line were the Juniors, after a great start in race one with Casey Williams having a flying start and keeping it until the last lap of moto 1, when he crashed hard on the whoops section leaving Ryan Tanner, Archie Hicks, Jaydon Murphy and Louis Thomas to fight it out. These were the main players but snapping at their heels all day was Connor Ford and Zak Clarke.

The Autos rode the whole track with ease, in moto one James Rowe had it pinned everywhere, that is until his clutch blew up, that unfortunately was the end of James’s day. James sparing partner Liam Gale took full advantage of the situation winning all three moto’s with Ben White taking all three second positions and Harrison Luff coming in third overall.

Fourth to the gate was the MX1/MX2 . Luke Blanchard was in a class of his own, out and gone in all three motos. Leighton Holmes and Scott Ardren both MX1 were fighting hard to hold off the MX2 pilots in the form of Luke Mellows and Darren Banwell out on his 250 2 smoker. Ryan Allen and Ryan Redwood both added to the mix in the MX2 class on 250 smokers. The racing was fast and furious with all these guys, with positions changing all the time. It was great to see the MX2 pilots mixing it with their larger counterparts, especially the 2 strokes. Luke Blanchard, Leighton Holmes and Scott Ardren were the top three in MX1. Luke Mellows, Darren Banwell and Ryan Allen were the boys of MX2.

Last to the line came the Rookies, these die hard kids always seem to be on full chat and Luke Dean certainly was, you wouldn’t of known he was on a 125 RM, who says 125 2 smokers aren’t competitive, this one certainly was, a joy to see and hear . Scott Wintersgill gave his all trying very hard to tame the little screamer but couldn’t quite make it. Apart from Luke the only one to bang in a lap time of just under 2 minutes consistently was Josh Blackwell, and Scott Wintersgill, with those three taking the overall top positions. Luke Sturgeon, Josh Sprague and Jack Hicken were all trying hard to add to the mix with some full on bar bashing.

Another great days racing at a great venue, our thanks to the marshals and all those that have supported South Somerset
