BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT

Maxxis British championships 2010 Round 6

Little Loveney Hall, Wakes Colne.

The penultimate round of the 2010 Maxxis sidecarcross championships took place at the Halstead clubs Little Loveney Hall circuit yesterday. After a break of eight years it was good to be back at a track that had been such a sidecar favourite. The organisation of the experienced members of the Halstead club was very good with the possible exception of dust control. The whole of East Anglia had been parched for many weeks but heavy showers on Thursday had given a lot of the area some relief – except Wakes Colne. They missed out completely. Intensive watering by the club from Wednesday onwards nearly managed to subdue the dust but couldn’t stop it altogether.

A slightly depleted entry, caused mainly by injuries, was reduced by one more in practice when Josh and Dan Chamberlain crashed heavily and Dan came off worst with a knee injury.

Race one was led by Brown / Peters from the Breachers with Jenkins / Girling in third. The other championship contenders, Wilkinson and Millard did not get such good starts and were in fifth and sixth place respectively. On the second lap Brown started to pull away from Breacher whilst Millard had passed Wilkinson and was closing on Jenkins. On the following lap Millard took both Jenkins and Breacher to move up to second. Wilkinson closed up on Jenkins but it took him a further four laps before he could make the pass. For the remainder of the race Millard closed the gap but never really troubled Brown who went on to take the win.

In race two Breacher got the holeshot from Pelling / France, Brown and Millard. Millard was obviously in a determined mood and was up to second place by the end of the first lap and early in lap two he took the lead. Brown passed Pelling on lap two and Breacher on lap four and then set off after Millard. Wilkinson did not get a good start and was about tenth. He worked his way up to sixth on lap four but then spent the next four laps in a three way scrap with Pelling and France / Machin.
At the front Brown started to close the gap on Millard but then on lap five began to slow – Luke’s handrail had broken at the inboard end. By half distance Breacher was right in Brown’s wheel tracks and on lap seven he was up to second. By this stage France had got the better of Pelling who was now under attack from Wilkinson. On the next lap France passed Brown and Wilkinson took Pelling. With just three laps to go both Wilkinson and Pelling passed Brown who finally came under pressure on the last lap from Etheridge / Humphrey but managed to hold onto sixth place. Millard took the win from Breacher with France third. This was Millard’s first win this year and only the second time Brown has been beaten.

The final race saw a couple of passenger changes after Lee Machin pulled out suffering from the heat and Pete Girling pulled out suffering from the rib injury he sustained in Genk. Ben Blythe and Josh Chamberlain took over. Breacher once again took the holeshot from B.Wilkinson / Parmenter, Bowers / Millard with Brown in fourth and Millard just behind him. Brown was quickly up to second and on lap three he took the lead. Breacher held second for just one lap when Millard passed him. S.Wilkinson again did not get a very good start and was in the middle of the pack to start with, pulling up to sixth on lap three. At the front Brown was maintaining the gap over Millard and went on to take a comfortable win with Breacher third. S. Wilkinson finished behind Breacher in fourth having passed Jenkins and his nephew on lap seven.

Daniel and Joe Millard took the overall win, their first ever, from Brown with Breacher third.
The final round of the championship is a Wattisfield on 19th Sept when double points will be on offer. This means that although Brown currently leads Wilkinson by 80 points it is still mathematically possible for any of the top four to win the title.
